Under proper conditions, moles may tunnel more than 100 feet a day in their unending quest for food. There are 2 types of moles found in the Mid-Atlantic. Let us review each of them.
Eastern mole - also known as the common mole, is a medium-sized, forefeet  are adapted for digging. This mole is the strongest of the group and is most often associated with tunnels and or mole mounds.
Star-nosed mole - is a very distinctive mammal, with black fur, and wide forefeet tipped with talons that are designed for digging. The palms of their pinkish and black feet face outwards. Their tail is long and hairy. The snout for which they are named has on its tip 11 pairs of little pink tentacles, splayed out like a star. These animals prefer areas with poor drainage, such as coniferous and deciduous forests, wet meadows, clearings, marshes and peatlands. They will also inhabit stream banks, lakes and ponds, and will venture into them for food.
