Mosquitos and Ticks – Lots of houses and people are a boon for mosquitos. More people mean more food, more places to live, and more breeding. A bottle cap of standing water is enough to breed. Standing water in gutters, pools, pond, trash cans and tire swings are ideal. And so is the Ashburn climate. Zika and West Nile virus is spread in Virginia mostly by the dreaded Asian tiger mosquito, which bite day and night. Potentially even more dangerous pests are ticks, specifically the deer tick. Lyme disease is the most common vector-borne illness in the United States. Cases have tripled in the US over the last 20 years. Its main vectors are mice and deer. Tick prevalence in Loudoun and Ashburn is now in the high area. The CDC reported 2,059 cases of confirmed of Lyme’s disease from 2000-2015 in Loudoun County. The actual number of Lyme disease cases may be much higher and is estimated at a total of 25,090 true cases.
